Well, it kinda changes from picture to picture, but I really started using a technique similar to what *rannsama uses: [link] I do all the shading in one layer and then blend using that technique in the tutorial (it's a ton of fun coloring that way~).
As for what colors I use to shade, it depends on what color the background is. And I tend to avoid using blend tools in photoshop as well. XD

hey, could i ask you how you do your shading? i like your style, as well as RJ's and I want to mess around and see what i can get down-packed so that i wont need to ask people what to do anymore. i just wanted to know like, how you get the colors smoothly blended and how to know what colors to highlight/shade with. if you could note me, reply or anything, that would be awesome! great gallery! love it!
